Blog Reader Demographics

A key part of business blog marketing is understanding your readership and potential prospects. After all, what do we know about the blogosphere? Well, Technorati is now tracking over 70 million weblogs, and with about 120,000 new blogs being created worldwide each day. There are about 1.5 million new blog postings each day.
Blog readers tend to be early adopters and influencers. Blog readers are more likely to take an action such as calling, speaking to or emailing as a result of what they have read in a blog posting. It is estimated that in the US 27% of the people read blogs on a regular basis and this number is growing.
What do we know about the readers of these blogs? Blogads.com has an ongoing blog readership project and in 2006 they surveyed over 35,000 or their readers.
- 62% of their readers are over 40
- 72% were male
- 66% had a family income over $60,000
- 39% had households size of 3 or more
- 78% were college graduates
- The top 3 categories for online purchases were for plane tickets, computers and consumer electronics.
- 82% do not have their own blog
- 67% read 5 or more blogs each day.
Among blog readers, the 5 most common occupations listed were:
- Retired (8.8%)
- Computer professional (8.7%)
- Educator (6.3%)
- Student (5.7%)
- Lawyer/Judge (5.0%)
The 5 most common industries listed were
- Education (14%)
- Computers (11%)
- Legal (7%)
- Health Care (6%)
- Government (5%).
Blog readers rated various media as useful (or extremely useful) sources of news and information:
- Blogs 89%
- Newspapers (online) 52%
- Radio 46%
- Magazines (online) 39%
- Magazines (print) 36%
- Newspapers (print) 32%
- Television 14%
