Blogs (even Blogspot) should be Hosted on Your Own Domain
This blog entry was posted on June 7, 2009.
Many bloggers make a major mistake. They use a Blogger (blogspot.com) or a WordPress.com blog and don’t use their own domain name. These bloggers lose critical branding that comes from owning their own domain name. After all, a major objective in blog marketing is to brand you as the expert.
Your options from best to worst are:
- Host your blog on your primary website. (yourwebsite.com/blog/)
- Host your blog on a separate domain that you own. (Yourblog.com)
- Use a blogspot.com or wordpress.com domain name. (yourblog.blogspot.com)
The best solution is to host your blog as part of your primary website. This way your website can benefit from the blogs natural ability to attract links and visitors.
Visitors will be attracted as they find your blog posts which are broadcast to the Internet via RSS. Search engines will list your blog postings within minutes of your writing a posting. Many visitors that come to your blog will explore your website to see who you are and what you do.
Your blog is a natural link attractor. If you write interesting and original content, others will link to your blog as they reference your writing as they write about the same topic. These links will not only help your blog’s ranking, it will help your primary website.
You can add your blogspot.com blog onto your website. Your blogs can be sent automatically by FTP. You can also display wordpress.com blogs on your website by using iframes. You can export your wordpress.com blog into a wordpress.org blog on your website.
If you want to use a blogspot.com or wordpress.com blog, at least purchase your own domain. You can forward (and mask) the domain to your blog. This way visitors will see only your domain name when the visit your blog.

I would buy a domain that you like and forward (and mask) that domain name. People will find you with the old URL and the new one. Promote the new URL and people will slowly switch over. Later you can move the blog to a wordpress.org blog if you like.

Janet,
You can always redirect your blogger blog over to your own domain at any time. You can also build up a new wordpress.org blog and export all your past blogs to your new blog. So all is not lost.
