Is Blogging Right for your Business?

Businesses are adopting blogging as the latest and best online marketing tool. But is business blog marketing the right answer for you? Blogging is not the best solution for every business. Here is what you should consider before getting started on a blog.

  1. Who: Whom do you want to reach with your blog? If your business is local, you want to reach potential customers in your local area. You will want to use community names liberally in your blog. How old is your targeted audience? If they are 60+ years old, you may only have a small fraction who read blogs. If they are under 50, then there is a very high number who already read blogs regularly.
  2. What: What do you want to accomplish? You should have a purpose and a goal for your blogging effort. It could be branding your company as the authority in your market niche or pushing your website onto page one Google results. Set a plan and follow it. If you don’t have a measurable goal, you won’t know if you are succeeding.
  3. Why: Why do you want to blog? What is your motivation? If you enjoy writing and journaling, then blogging is a natural creative outlet that will fit into your lifestyle. But if you are one of those that prefer a visit to the dentist for a root canal over writing, then blogging is not for you.

Before you get started, consider things such as are you restricted in what you can say on your blog? Some organizations are regulated and restricted on how they can advertise and promote themselves. If you deal with financial products or military secrets, then blogging will probably not work for you.

Don’t get me wrong. I am an avid promoter of blogs to market your business. But blogging is not the best answer for every business.
