Clearly Define What Business You Are In?

It really doesn’t matter if I am doing business consulting, writing a business plan, or planning out a website.  The same question is fundamental to success.  It sounds so simple, but many times I will spend hours discussing this. The question… What business are you in?

Small business owners frequently are afraid that defining what it is that they do will cause them to miss some potential sale. Actually, the opposite is true. They lose focus, and never become an expert at anything. Yes, the old saying “A Jack of all trades is good at none” applies to business to.

This is the foundation for any business plan, marketing plan or business strategy.  Once you can clearly define what your business does, then you can identify your market you compete in and target your prospective customers. Once you can clearly identify your targeted customer, you can understand who they are and how they make their buying decision.

Now you can form a sound marketing plan to reach and convince these targeted customers and you are most of the way to having a successful business.  It doesn’t matter whether you are doing Internet marketing for your new website or a marketing plan for a bricks and mortar business, the first step is to define what it is that you do.
