Just Having a Website Isn't Enough
This blog entry was posted on October 10, 2009.
Remember back in the early days when just having a website was enough. Simply having a website was enough to stand out and be noticed. Yes, that was the olden days of the web… back in the 90’s. In 1995 if your business had a website, you would be viewed as one of the elite and it was easy to attract visitor traffic.
Fast forward to Late 2009 and at last count there were more than 226 million websites on the World Wide Web. The Internet is much more crowded and more competitive. Every business has a website… or at least should. How do you compete and standout from the crowd?
You have to be creative, understand your audience and prompt them to take action. Each website needs to look at 3 things.
- Attract: With so many websites on the web, each website needs a plan to attract buyers. Traffic can come from organic SEO, PPC, social media marketing, referral traffic or even affiliate marketing.
- Interact: Posting your name and what you offer isn’t enough. You need to solve a real issue. Successful businesses are moving into social media with blogging, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Other options include opt-in email marketing and using auto responders that deliver mini-courses in sequential emails.
- Convert: Each website should have a conversion path or selling sequence built in. This is not just having a call to action. It is designing in your best sales strategy that results in a sale, a lead or a phone call.
A website is not merely an advertising piece. It is much more than that. You are planning and implementing an online business. You need to create a website business plan complete with goals and strategies before you rush into a design.
