March 2007 Internet Statistics and Trends

One of the first steps in any marketing campaign is to understand the market. In Internet marketing you need to understand the size, trends and growth dynamics for the Internet.

These are the latest Internet statistics for March 2007. In the United States, there are over 211 million Internet users. Based on the most recent statistics 70% of the US population is online. These users conducted 6.9 Billion searches in February 2007. This means that the average user does 33 searches per month. Worldwide, more than 1.1 billion people are using the Internet. This means the US represents 19% of the Worldwide market. China is number 2 with 12% of the total market.

Total online sales reached approximately $104 billion in the U.S. during 2006. This is expected to grow at a rate in excess of 20% per year.

There are 87,367,677 registered domains.74.1% of these are .com and 10.7% are .net.

Search engine statistics for March 2007 (From Hitwise US)

  1. Google: 64%
  2. Yahoo: 21%
  3. MSN 9%
  4. Ask: 4%

And ComScore (February 2007) with their results

  1. Google: 48%
  2. Yahoo: 28%
  3. MSN 11%
  4. Ask: 5%

For 2006, online advertising with Google and Yahoo exceeded $13 billion in the US alone.
The number of American homes and businesses with broadband access has topped 60 million at the beginning of 2007.

So what are the hot trends for 2007? Look for Ipod music downloads, Voice over IP (VOIP) Internet phones and growth in social media such as corporate blogging.
