Create Microsites as an SEO Strategy

Microsites are focused, single topic websites. These are websites that are separate from your main business website. They are an effective SEO tool when they are highly optimized around a single phrase or a set of closely related phrases. You create links back to your main website with these keywords in the anchor text.

If your primary website covers several topics, then you could create a series of focused microsites dealing with the topics you want to promote.

Example #1: You have a printing company that produces business cards, brochures and letterhead. You have a large main website that describes all the printing products that you produce.  Let’s assume that you want to promote your brochure business. You decide to produce 3 micro-sites, each focused around a single primary keyword phrase that you want to be ranked for. Each microsite will also be optimized for a series of closely related phrases shown in parenthesis below.

  1. color brochure printing (full color brochure printing, 4 color brochure printing, color brochure printer)
  2. tri fold brochures (tri fold brochure printing, trifold brochure printing, tri fold brochure design)
  3. brochure graphic design (brochure design samples, corporate brochure design, best brochure design)

These are produced not as commercial sales sites, but as informational websites. This may not be important here, but it will be in example 2.

The content is prepared as interesting original content that is keyword rich. They must be optimized search engines and to be interesting to visitors. Keyword phrases are linked back to highly relevant pages on the main company website.

The final step is to build up the authority of these microsites by building links to these sites. This way the links from the microsite to you business websites will be highly valued by the search engines.

Example #2: You have a financial products website where you all content must be legally reviewed before it can be added to your selling website. You are also cautious about adding links because you are concerned about compliance.

Having informational sites for your microsites makes it easier to have material reviewed and approved and this is a safer approach to link building. You can then do link building on these informational sites since they are removed from your primary website.
