Why Top Ranked Websites Use XML Sitemaps

For SEO reasons, it is important that you add an XML sitemap to your website and keep it updated to keep your website fully indexed by the search engines. These sitemaps give the search engines a complete list of pages you want indexed, relative page priority, along with how frequently the page is updated.
XML sitemaps are considered the best practice in building search engine friendly websites. An HTML sitemap makes it easy for people to find what they are looking for; XML sitemaps the same for search engines. They don’t directly affect search engine rankings. XML sitemaps just ensure your website is crawlable and easy for the search engines to index all pages on your site.
Building a search engine friendly website means making a website where all content can be easily spidered. You can do this with good internal linking, good page structure and using plenty of keyword rich text. If your website has structural issues, XML sitemaps still help search engines find all the pages on your site.
An XML sitemap will help get the pages on your website indexed. It won’t improve the rankings of a page that has already been indexed. It is easy see how many pages on your website site have been indexed on Google. Do a Google search for site:www.yourdomain.com. If the actual number of pages is higher, then adding a sitemap may be your easiest solution.
Sitemaps can be easily generated using xml-sitemaps.com or Google supplies a list compliant sitemap generators.
