What Is Twitter And How Can It Benefit Your Company?
This blog entry was posted on March 5, 2009.
It’s the latest trend and you’re hearing about it everywhere – but what exactly is Twitter?
Think of it as a social networking site like MySpace or Facebook, simplified, and focused on just one important question:
“What are you doing?”
And that’s the question that greets you when you’re logged in to your account. At its core, Twitter is a “micro-blogging” service that limits messages to 140 characters. Plan on seeing Slumdog Millionaire tonight? “Tweet” about it. Had something great for lunch? “Tweet” about that! You get the point.
While the service can be seen as very “me”-centric, what has really allowed Twitter to take off is the versatility and flexibility it offers to creative people and companies.
Some examples include:
- Comcast has a Twitter set up to respond to customer inquiries that any customer service person would normally take.
- A local news station, KATU, posts news stories on their Twitter.
- And Amazon “tweets” deals from their special Gold Box area of their website (which I actually have sent via text message to my phone because I’m a sucker for great deals).
What are some things your business can do on Twitter to encourage participation and for people to “follow” your Twitter?
Offer Twitter-only coupons with special deals, give your company a human side by posting funny stories or insightful commentary, or even use it to form a bond with people who enjoy your brand like what the Portland Trailblazers and Samsung Mobile USA do.
Just be prepared: exposure to Twitter can cause Twitter-addictiveness.
