Why do some websites succeed while the majority of others fail? Business web design looks first at the targeted customer. A top notch business site is focused on what the visitor wants to know and delivers a memorable marketing message around that need.

  1. Target: Who is your best customer? Are they a business professional? A soccer mom? Perhaps a college student living in a dorm? This affects the look of the website and even how you word your message.
  2. Focus: What is the purpose of your website? Present a focused group of products that appeal to your target market. A wide offering not only confuses the visitor, but also the search engines creating lower search rankings.
  3. Content: A good business website provides information that is valuable to the visitor. If your website provides important information, it will draw your readers deeper into your site.
  4. Anticipate: Visitors come to your website with a need. Looking for the answer to their problem. A great business website anticipates the questions and answers them. It gives visitors a reason to return.
  5. Navigation: The navigation should be simple and intuitive. This is not a place to be creative and abstract in labeling your navigation. Limit the choices and guide your customers through the sales process.
  6. About Us: This is one of the most visited pages. People want to know who you are, how long you have been in business and even your mission, vision and values. This is an important page to create trust between you and your potential customer.
  7. Call to Action: First decide what you want visitors to do: buy, call or request a quote. Then create an action you want for every page. Use this to guide your visitor thru your sales process.
  8. Payment: If you accept online payments, offer a variety payment options. Make it easy for your visitors to buy. In addition to credit cards you can take online checks. Allow an option for purchase orders and mail in payments.
  9. Customer: Customer service is critical in a business website. Give tips and valuable information. Be available to answer questions by phone or email. Include a guarantee. Include a FAQ page to answer questions before they are asked.
  10. Verify: Carefully check and test your website. Spell-check your site repeatedly. Have others read and check for spelling, grammar and accuracy. Check if your website is compatible with all the leading browsers.

Best business websites take a business consulting approach to understanding the marketing message and then communicating that message to your targeted market.
