E-Commerce sales are expected to be $130 Billion in the US for 2007. This is over a 20% gain over 2006. There are important things you can do as part of e-commerce website design to capture your part of the market. Here are 8 design tips that you should factor into you Internet marketing strategies.
- Avoid a Cluttered Layout: A web design should make it clear to visitors what they will find on your ecommerce web site. A design cluttered with too many options, won’t give the visitor a clear idea of what they should do on your site.
- Use of white space: Keep clutter to a minimum with images, backgrounds and colored fonts selected to give a simple appearance. White space gives a sense of spaciousness and overall neatness to a site.
- Credibility and Trust: Use clear product photos so customers can see what they are getting. Let them know that the information they give to you won’t be sold to others. Clearly state something like this: We will never give out your e-mail address for any reason. Have as liberal of a returns policy as you can be comfortable with.
- Product Search: Allow visitors the option to search or browse products. Design your website layout for navigation in product categories that will allow a potential customer to browse products by price, by name and type of use. Integrate many search capabilities and options.
- Keep Text Short and Neat: Readers are more likely to read short sentences, paragraphs, and articles written as if you’re having a friendly conversation.
- Clearly written Product Descriptions: They must be easily understood by your typical customer. First, describe the product in comprehensible specifics. Then, offer the ability to delve into more specific product details for those who want it.
- Keep the Checkout simple: 30 to 60 percent of customers abandon their shopping carts at the last moment due to a confusing and difficult checkout process. Keep it short, one or two pages plus a final summary confirmation page.
- Test your e-commerce site: Before going live, Find one willing test shopper who is not familiar with your store and have them go thru your buying process to get immediate, real-person feedback.
