What you can’t see on your website can hurt your search rankings. How your website is coded will affect your website’s search rankings. Coding errors are easy to detect and will hurt your ability to bring in more website traffic. Ultimately it is keyword rich text and link popularity that are the biggest contributors to gaining search rankings and bringing website visitors. Poorly coded sites hurt and can even prevent first page Google rankings.

Websites with validated code, higher CTC Ratios and built using XHTML / CSS are ultimately much more search engine friendly. Fortunately there are tools  to easily detect coding flaws.

Valid Code: Validated code or clean code will make it easier for search engines to spider your web pages. W3C code validator is the industry standard and it is a free tool to use. The code validator will not only list the errors, it will show you exactly where it occurs in your code. Although error free code is the goal, a low number of errors such as fewer than 10 errors are usually acceptable. If you have 50 or more errors, this is critical to address with your web developer.

CTC Ratio: This is the code to content ratio or sometimes called the code to text ratio. This represents the percentage of actual text in your web page. The more code you have on your web page, the more “junk” search engine spiders need to crawl through to find your content. This free code to content ratio tool will show your website’s CTC Ratio. Remember 5% or less is awful and 50% or more is outstanding. Passing is 20% or more.

XHTML/CSS: XHTML is the newer coding language. XHTML is the next coding generation as HTML heads to XML standards. CSS allows a developer to code without the use of tables. XHTML / CSS leads to a much more search engine friendly code that is easier and quicker for search engines to spider. To detect which your website is using, use the W3C code validator and it will show which language your web page is coded in.

Remember, coding is only part of the SEO equation. Focus first on keyword rich text and link popularity.

  1. It is one of the most common mistake made by the companies, that they don’t care about the design, way of design and content placement. A good website design can surely enhance the progress of your website popularity approaching you to shine on the first page of the most prominent search engines like google, yahoo, and windows live. The latest advancements in the scanning algorithms of search engines hinder your effort of getting a high page rank if website coding doesn’t comply with the w3c standards.
